Appendix A: Startup Checklist

Observing Conditions

• Check the conditions are suitable:

     wind < 40 mph
     humidity < 85%
     no dust
     no threatening weather
  

Dome

• Open dome main shutter then the drop-out shutter.

• Open and latch the dome door.

• Turn off air conditioner.

Telescope & Instrument

• Open MIS dark hatch

• Leave the mirror covers closed until ready to collect data

• Fill instrument dewar with liquid nitrogen if required.

• Move the LN₂ storage dewar, ladder, etc. away from the telescope to the northeast corner of the platform.

• Lower the moving platform all the way down.

Computers

• Login to mcgraw as user obs13m, password posted on dry the erase board.

Telescope Control System

• Turn the key and then press the TELESCOPE CONTROL START button.

• Turn the sidereal drive rotary switch to 60 Hz.

• Turn TCS MONITOR on the TELESCOPE CONSOLE on and adjust brightness and contrast as desired.

• Turn the TCS MONITOR in observing room on.

• Start the xtcs window on the Linux station "mcgraw" if not already started.

MIS and Guider

Turn on the following units:

• Turn on the GUIDER PC, if not already on. It will automatically start the TVGUIDER program.
• Turn on the CAMERA POWER SUPPLY.
• Turn on the GUIDE MONITOR.
