Appendix B: Shutdown Checklist
Telescope
- Stow the telescope at the zenith (Dec=31:57) :
- If you wish to put the telescope precisely to zenith then:
- turn the TRACK off but leave the DRIVES on
- Make fine adjustments with hand paddle in the control room,
until the TILT METERS read zero.
Telescope Control System
- Turn the SIDEREAL DRIVE rotary switch to OFF.
- Press STOP; power goes off at the TELESCOPE CONTROLLER.
- Turn off TELESCOPE MONITOR or lower brightness.
Computers and Instrumentation
- Fill instrument dewar with liquid nitrogen if required.
- Leave the Linux workstations and X-windows running.
- When did you last backup your data to tape on mcgraw or DVD on hill?
- Did you remember to turn off the dome flat field lamps if used?
MIS and Guider
- Close the MIS hatch.
- Are all the spectral lamps / flat field lamps turned off?
- Turn off the following units located in the observing room:
- GUIDE CAMERA POWER SUPPLY.
- GUIDE MONITOR.
Dome
- Check that the mirror covers are fully closed.
- Check that the dome is at the home position. If the contactor box
is mis-aligned:
- Rotate the dome manually from the dome control panel.
- Close the drop-out shutter and the main shutter.
- If they won't close or are intermittent the contactor box is not
properly aligned.
- Close all the dome doors
- Re-check that you turned off the LN2 storage dewar after filling
the instrument!
- Turn on Air conditioner.
Conserve Energy!
- Turn off all the lights. This a) saves money and b) keeps down
the potential load on the generator, which may fail to start
automatically when too heavily loaded.
